//BUZZCUT// Double Thrills will return in Autumn 2020, with three events taking over the Centre for Contemporary Arts with radical performance practises from local, national and international artists. Alongside this we are running several artist development opportunities in associateship with the Double Thrills programme.

Application Info

The Emerging Artist Award is for an artist of any age (18+) with under 2 years professional experience working in Live Art and/or contemporary performance. It is designed to support an artist through funding, advice and mentorship to develop a work to platform at Double Thrills in Autumn 2020.

We appreciate that the term Emerging Artist is a difficult one, and artists make significant changes throughout their working life. This fund is intended to guide an artist through creating a piece of work for a professional context, allowing them to increase their ambition and connect them to a national network of presenters and supporters for Live Art. We are open to artists who have had successful careers in other art forms and are interested in experimenting with Live Art, those who have just graduated from a performance degree looking into experimental practices and also those who have not received any formal education or training in performance.

The Award provides:

  • £1200 Budget including development & 2 consecutive performances

  • A £300 development fund to hire an artist mentor or go and see performance work in national festivals

  • Up to a weeks Residency in the Centre for Contemporary Arts

  • Mentoring and Advice from //BUZZCUT// Team

  • A platform at Double Thrills in Autumn 2020 (2 consecutive nights)

Through discussion with the successful applicant we will support them to find appropriate partners and additional funding and, if appropriate, we will also create a strategic plan for the future life of the project.

Eligibility / Criteria

  • Applicants must be based in Scotland and have been working professionally in Live Art or contemporary performance for under 2 years.

  • The opportunity is open to artist duos and collectives.

  • This opportunity is not open to those in Undergraduate or undertaking a Masters focused on their artistic practise. Students graduating in June 2020 are welcome to apply.

  • If the applicant lives outside of Glasgow, we will be able to support travel and accommodation to perform at Double Thrills.

We are looking for artists working or interested in working in Live Art and contemporary performance. We understand these terms are difficult to define but we consider it as work which experiments with the possibilities of the live event. We have worked with artists whose work draws from theatre, visual art, dance, cabaret, club performance, music, activism, however there is always a commitment to exploring the various possibilities of liveness, pushing their forms to previously unexplored territory. We are open to work that sits within a standard studio set up, is durational, is for one audience member or for small audiences and we are open to other forms and contexts. As a general rule we don’t support new writing, plays, poetry, or circus.

To get a better idea of the work we support take a look at our previous Festival and Double Thrills programmes. If you’re still unsure whether your work is within our remit - feel free to get in touch before the application deadline.

We especially welcome applications from d/Deaf and disabled artists. We are more than happy to discuss any access requirements you may have and we will shape the opportunity in a way to best support you and your work.

We particularly welcome artists of colour to apply and will be keen to discuss the support structures that you feel would enable us to best host you & your work.

“The investment in our public body has been indispensable over the period of 2019 allowing us greater expansion, productivity and infiltration into hundreds of fresh minds. Helping us develop new products, research and reach new customers and demographics. We have been delighted to work alongside //BUZZCUT// and hope they gather plenty of submissions worthy of their investment in 2020.”
- spokesperson for Sweætshops® - recipient of 2019 Award
